Fair and Comprehensive Performance Evaluation of 14 Second Round SHA-3 ASIC Implementations

چکیده
Hardware implementation quality will be considered as an important factor for evaluating the NIST SHA-3 competition candidates in the second round. The most traditional and popular hardware im plementation method is designing ASICs with standard cells. However, to benchmark 14 second round SHA-3 ASIC designs based on a fair and comprehensive methodology can be very challenging because of the unde fined application scenarios, various choices of technologies and multiple optimization goals. In this paper we describe a consistent and system atic approach to move a SHA-3 hardware benchmark process from FPGA prototyping to ASIC implementation, and we present our latest results for ASIC evaluation of the 14 second round SHA-3 candidates. The ef fort reported in this paper is complementary to the effort reported in the SHA-3 conference submission ”How can we conduct fair and consistent hardware evaluation for SHA-3 candidates?” [4].

In this talk, we will introduce an open-source en vironment, called ATHENa for fair, comprehensive, automated, and collaborative hardware benchmarking of cryptographic al gorithms. We believe that this environment is very suitable for use in evaluation of hardware performance of SHA-3 candidates from the point of view of speed, resource utilization, cost, power consumption, etc. At this point...
متن کاملOn The Impact of Target Technology in SHA-3 Hardware Benchmark Rankings
Both FPGAs and ASICs are widely used as the technology for comparing SHA-3 hardware benchmarking process. However, the impact of target technology in SHA-3 hardware benchmark rankings has hardly been considered. A cross-platform comparison between the FPGA and ASIC results of the 14 second round SHA-3 designs demonstrates the gap between two sets of benchmarking results. In this paper we descri...

متن کاملFair and Comprehensive Methodology for Comparing Hardware Performance of Fourteen Round Two SHA-3 Candidates Using FPGAs
Performance in hardware has been demonstrated to be an important factor in the evaluation of candidates for cryptographic standards. Up to now, no consensus exists on how such an evaluation should be performed in order to make it fair, transparent, practical, and acceptable for the majority of the cryptographic community. In this paper, we formulate a proposal for a fair and comprehensive evalu...
